ADSL Requirements
ADSL is a highly advanced service, which means that it is important that you satisfy the necessary
requirements. BT has not yet completed the rollout of ADSL to the whole of the UK, so your location
may not be eligible for an upgrade to ADSL, so make sure you check that your number can be ADSL
enabled before you order.
The following other requirements also apply:
- A 6 month minimum contract applies to all ADSL products.
- Please note that the following are not compatible with ADSL: ISDN, BT Highway, PBX lines,
RedCare, BT VideoStream, BT DataStream, Pulse Metering Facilities, Coin box operated or any
line provided by a provider other than BT. ADSL may affect other services on the telephone
line such as security systems and we strongly advise you to have these services tested once
ADSL has been installed.
- You must adhere to our Acceptable Use Policy (AUP - available on our website), which,
in general terms, ensures that you must not abuse the service to the detriment of other users.
You should also realise that you will be legally responsible for content hosted on your server.
- We will monitor usage, and reserve the right to change our terms and conditions at any time.
If we do so, such changes will be published on our website. If you are unsure about this policy,
please get in touch! We hope not to impose specific limits on the use your ADSL line, however,
excessive and persistent heavy use is something we request you avoid. ADSL as provided by BT
and ourselves is intended as 'bursting' bandwidth, where usage fluctuates. Examples of heavy
use include offering file downloads, or heavily trafficked websites.
- Please note that we do not offer support in running your own network and hardware.
Important Security Considerations
- Network Address Translation (NAT) is available as an option at no extra cost with our
ADSL Network range. This provides one IP address for the ADSL router, which then masquerades
on behalf of your own computers behind the router. This acts as a kind of crude firewall as
your own machines (and their IP addresses) are hidden from the public Internet. This does not
prevent you from web surfing, but certain network applications may not work correctly under
NAT. Additionally, it is impossible to host your own servers, such as a mail server or web
server.
- If you choose the no-NAT option, we will allocate you with five IP addresses as standard.
Further addresses may be available, but we reserve the right to make a charge for this. One
of these IP addresses should be used by your proxy/firewall server, which can be enabled to
run NAT on behalf of your desktops.
- If you choose the no-NAT option or use ADSL Home, and you do not run a proxy/firewall,
you will be exposing your network to the public Internet - this exposes you to attack. With
a permanent connection and fixed IP addressing, it will not matter how small and invisible
you think you are. You can still easily be found! Please take this warning seriously and
either avoid storing sensitive information or running mission-critical applications, or run
security software to protect your network. Our website will be updated with information about
suitable security products, and we will shortly be offering our own security products for use
with ADSL connections.
Special Conditions for ADSL Home
- ADSL Home is used together with a USB modem, for which specific drivers must be loaded on
your computer. Currently the manufacturer has only made available drivers for Windows 98, 98SE,
Millennium, and MacOS 8.6 and higher. These will be provided on CD at the time of installation.
Changes to your Service ("Regrades")
- Where a customer requests a re-grade or reconfiguration changes to the IP addressing
service options, an additional single payment charge will be made.
- Rental charges will be recalculated as appropriate following the re-grade of service.
Re-grades are allowed at any time including during the minimum period. In all re-grade cases
a new minimum period will apply starting from the activation of the re-graded service.
- Any pre paid rental charges will be refunded to the customer following any re-grade of service to a lower data rate.
- For a re-grade to a higher data rate ADSL Network service during the minimum period, the customer will not have to pay BT any outstanding minimum period rental charges for the original service.
- For a re-grade to a lower data rate ADSL Network service during the minimum period, the customer will pay any outstanding minimum period rental charges for the original service.
